Assalamu alaykum,

We usually take precautions regarding modesty when speaking to foreign men, and this leads to us not initiating the greeting or not returning it for fear of falling into sin. This precaution comes from the general principle of being cautious, since caution is good in all cases. The question is: Is our behavior considered correct or religious extremism?

Waalykum assalam,

According to both Grand Ayatollahs Sayyid al-Sistani and Sayyid al-Khamenei (may the Almighty prolong their lives):

If greeting a non-mahram leads to committing a sin, or if the likelihood of committing a sin is significant, it is forbidden to initiate the greeting or to converse with him. This is not because precaution is good; rather, it is obligatory in this situation.
