Assalamu alykum,

If a young woman (after getting engaged) is in a state where she is considering divorce and requires time in order to be able to make the correct decision, is it permissible for her to not speak with her fiancée/husband and to not see him until she decides whether to divorce or remain with him?

Waalykum assalam,

According to Grand Ayatollah Sayyid al-Khamenei (may the Almighty prolong his life):

The aforementioned is not permissible for her.

According to Grand Ayatollah Sayyid al-Sistani (may the Almighty prolong his life):

It is incumbent upon both spouses to fulfill that which Allah the Almighty commanded with regards to upright cohabitation [al-mu'asharah b'il-ma'roof]. As such, if refusal to speak with or see him is considered to be non-upright cohabitation ['adm al-mu'asharah b'il-ma'roof]  then it is impermissible [haraam].

May the Almighty grant you tawfeeq in all of your affairs
