As followers of the Imamate, we believe that the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) are the rightful leaders whom Allah has commanded us to obey and love. They are purified and free from sin, and their commands are commands of Allah. Disobeying them is akin to disobeying the Messenger, and disobeying the Messenger is like disobeying Allah. Therefore, we must submit to them and follow their guidance.
On one hand, we believe that their words, actions, and approvals are authoritative, as established in the principles of jurisprudence. Every movement and stillness of theirs stems from their status as the chosen servants of Allah. Allah describes His Prophet in His holy book: [And he does not speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed].
Thus, their authority is derived from Allah, not independent of Him. Any action they perform is by His power, and they seek assistance from Him. This principle governs all statements in the narrations that attribute actions to them, and any accusations of polytheism against them arise from a misunderstanding of this principle.
If we say that our master Ali (peace be upon him) stopped the sun, it means he did so by the power of his Lord, not by his own independent action.
For more details about the incident, we have discussed it in Question 8159. Those interested may refer to it.
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad and his pure family.
