Ayatollah Khamenei (may Allah protect him):
Not studying is not forbidden; however, wasting time through idleness and laziness is problematic. If a student benefits from the advantages designated for students, they must follow the specific academic curriculum. Otherwise, they are not allowed to benefit from those advantages such as salary and grants.

Ayatollah Sistani (may Allah protect him):
Not studying in itself is not forbidden, but university students and professors should be aware of their field of specialization as it relates to other scientific centers, especially in medicine, so that their knowledge and practice are contemporary in their field. They should also focus on developing sciences through useful scientific articles and pioneering discoveries, competing with other scientific centers with the available resources. They should not merely be students of others in learning and consumers of the tools they produce; rather, they should actively contribute to the creation and production of knowledge, just as their forefathers were pioneers and leaders in previous times. No nation is more deserving of this than another. You should nurture the exceptional talents among the youth who show brilliance and intelligence, even if they come from underprivileged backgrounds, and support them as you would your own children until they reach high levels of beneficial knowledge. You will earn rewards for the results of their work, which will benefit your community and future generations.
