A woman has a regular menstrual cycle of seven days but has been experiencing light bleeding for a few days after her period for the past three or four months. The total bleeding does not exceed ten days. Is this blood considered menstrual blood or irregular bleeding? If this continues for two or three months, will her regular cycle be invalidated? What about the days of purity in between?

Peace be upon you.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sistani (may Allah protect him):

1) As long as the total bleeding does not exceed ten days, all of it is considered menstrual blood.

2) Regarding whether her cycle is regular or not, the following points apply:

1. A single instance of bleeding that differs from her previous cycle does not invalidate her regular cycle.

2. If she experiences two similar instances of bleeding that differ from her original cycle, her cycle will change to the new one.

3. If she sees blood twice that differs from her original cycle but is not similar, she will be considered irregular.

4. If she sees blood multiple times that differ from her original cycle, her regular cycle will be invalidated, and she will be considered irregular.

5. A regular cycle is invalidated if she sees blood for two consecutive months exceeding ten days.

6. A regular cycle is also invalidated if she sees blood for more than two months, with each month exceeding ten days.

3) As for the days of purity between two instances of menstrual blood, it is recommended to treat them according to the rulings of both the pure and the menstruating woman.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Khamenei (may Allah protect him):

1-3) If the total bleeding and the days of purity in between do not exceed ten days, then the days of purity are also considered as part of the menstrual period.

2) Regarding whether her cycle is regular or not, the following points apply:

1. A single instance of bleeding that differs from her previous cycle does not invalidate her regular cycle.

2. Her cycle will change to a new one if she sees two similar instances of bleeding that differ from her previous cycle.

3. The status of her previous cycle remains uncertain, and she should exercise caution if she sees blood twice that differ from her previous cycle.

4. Her cycle will be invalidated if she sees blood multiple times that differ from her previous cycle.

5. A regular cycle is not invalidated by seeing blood for two consecutive months exceeding ten days.

6. A regular cycle is also not invalidated by seeing blood for more than ten days in more than two consecutive months.
