A girl approached another girl with desire at the age of 13. Is there a ghusl (ritual washing) required other than the ghusl of janabah (major ritual impurity)? If no semen was released, is ghusl still required? Does this invalidate fasting even if no semen was released or there was no feeling of weakness? What is the expiation required if one needs to make up the fast?

Peace be upon you.

Ayatollah al-Uzma Sayyid Sistani (may Allah protect him):

1) Only the ghusl of janabah is required.

2) If janabah is not realized, ghusl is not required.

3) Fasting is not invalidated unless janabah is realized.

4) If this act was done believing it does not invalidate fasting, no expiation is required, whether one believed it was forbidden or not. If one deliberately engaged in this act knowing it was forbidden, believing—albeit mistakenly—that it does not invalidate fasting, no expiation is required; however, knowledge of the obligation of expiation is not a condition for its requirement.

- The expiation is: the expiation for breaking a fast in Ramadan is to choose between freeing a slave, fasting for two consecutive months, or feeding sixty needy people, with each person receiving a measure of food. It is preferable to combine all three if breaking the fast was due to a forbidden act. Therefore, if one cannot feed, they may fast instead.

Ayatollah al-Uzma Sayyid Khamenei (may Allah protect him):

1) Only the ghusl of janabah is required.

2) If janabah is not realized, ghusl is not required.

3) Fasting is not invalidated unless janabah is realized.

4) If this act occurred while fasting and you knew it invalidated fasting, you must make up the fast and perform expiation. If you were unaware it invalidated fasting but knew it was forbidden, in addition to making up the fast, expiation is required as a precaution. If you were unaware of its prohibition, only making up the fast is required.

- The expiation is: you must fast for two consecutive months or feed sixty needy people—each receiving a measure of food. If the fast was broken due to a forbidden act like masturbation or unlawful intercourse, it is preferable to combine both. Therefore, if you cannot feed, you may fast instead.
