Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Khamenei (may Allah protect him):
Regarding the ruling on apostasy:
- Before consummation:
The marriage is immediately invalidated, whether the apostasy is from nature or from a religion.
- After consummation:
If the wife apostatizes, the annulment of the marriage is contingent upon the completion of her waiting period (iddah), in case she returns from her apostasy.
If the husband apostatizes from nature, the marriage is immediately invalidated.
If he apostatizes from a religion, the annulment of the marriage is contingent upon the completion of the wife's waiting period, in case she returns.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sistani (may Allah protect him):
If the husband converts from a religion or the wife converts from a religion or nature, if the conversion occurs before consummation or if the wife is either too young or has reached menopause, the marriage is invalidated and there is no waiting period required. However, if the conversion occurs after consummation and the woman is of menstruating age, she must observe the waiting period for divorce - which will be detailed in the book on divorce - and the invalidation of her marriage is contingent upon the completion of the waiting period. If either of the apostates returns to Islam before the waiting period ends, the marriage remains valid; otherwise, it is invalidated upon apostasy.
