What is the ruling for someone who learned about the lunar eclipse after it had ended? And what about someone who knew about the eclipse but fell asleep and did not wake up for the prayer? [AR_ID:5213]

Peace be upon you.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sistani (may Allah protect him):

If a person did not know about the eclipse until it had completely ended and the disk was not entirely obscured, there is no obligation to make up the prayer. However, if they were aware of it and did not pray, even out of forgetfulness, or if the disk was completely obscured, they must make up the prayer. It is also recommended to perform a ritual washing before making it up if the obscuration was complete and they did not pray out of disobedience.

If they had prior knowledge of the eclipse, such as being informed by astronomers about its occurrence at a specific time, this may lead to certainty or assurance. However, it is possible that the requirement to make up the prayer, if the disk was not entirely obscured, depends on knowing about the eclipse at the time it occurred, rather than just prior knowledge. Nonetheless, it is advisable to make up the prayer if they did not pray until the eclipse was completely over, even if they were previously aware of it due to negligence or other reasons.

For other signs besides the eclipses, if one does not pray until the time connected to the sign has passed, the obligation to pray is lifted, although it is preferable to perform it as long as one is alive.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Khamenei (may Allah protect him):

If someone did not know about the eclipse at all until it had completely ended, and if the disk was entirely obscured, they must make up the prayer of the signs. However, if only part of it was obscured, there is no obligation to make it up.

If someone knew about the eclipse at the time it occurred and did not perform the prayer of the signs, even out of forgetfulness, they must make it up, even if the entire disk was not obscured.

If they were informed about the occurrence of the eclipse before it happened, such as being told by astronomers that a partial eclipse would occur that night, they do not need to wait for it to happen. However, if the eclipse occurs, even partially, and they did not perform the prayer of the signs, they must make it up in this case.
