Peace be upon you. Is it permissible to eat tuna fish produced in Thailand?

Response from Grand Ayatollah Khamenei and Grand Ayatollah Sistani:

There are two conditions for the permissibility of eating fish:

First: It must have scales according to common understanding.

Second: The fisherman must catch it alive, or it must die in the fishing net or enclosure.

It is not a condition for the fisherman to be Muslim, nor is it required to mention the name of Allah when slaughtering the fish.

If a non-Muslim catches the fish and takes it out of the water alive, or it dies in the net or enclosure, and it has scales, it is permissible to eat it.

If a person doubts whether this fish has scales or not:

Grand Ayatollah Khamenei: It is ruled as permissible.

Grand Ayatollah Sistani: It is assumed to be non-permissible, and eating it is not allowed.
