In washing the face, can I scoop water and pour it on my cheek, then bring it down to my chin? Or must all the pours be from the hairline? Even if I have finished washing my forehead. Should I finish washing the upper part before the lower part? Or can I wash from the cheek to the chin and then from the hairline to the cheek? [AR_ID:2790]

Peace be upon you and God's mercy and blessings.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Khamenei (may God protect him):

It is strongly recommended to start from the top and wash from the top downwards in a customary manner.

Source: Special Inquiry.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sistani (may God protect him):

It is obligatory to start from the top of the face downwards, and it suffices to pour water from the top and then apply it to both sides in a customary manner, following a curved line. If you pour water from the bottom and wash from the top with the help of your hand, that is sufficient. However, merely passing your hand over the area where water is poured with the intention of ablution is not enough; there must be enough water to be considered a wash in a customary sense.

May you be successful in all good.
