Assalamu alaykum,

Is it forbidden to simply be in a place where there is forbidden singing [ghina'] taking place? Or is it forbidden to listen to it? Specifically, I want to register in a sports club (for health reasons), and there is no club available without singing occurring (i.e. Forbidden music being played which includes ghina'). Is it permissible to go there with headphones on so that I do not hear that being played? Or is it forbidden to be there in all cases?

Waalykum assalam,

According to Grand Ayatollah Sayyid al-Khamenei (may the Almighty prolong his life):
Work or training may require entering some clubs/gyms that broadcast forbidden music. There is no problem with work or training, but listening to frivolous music is forbidden. In cases where one is forced to enter a gathering of forbidden music and singing, it is permissible to enter on the condition that one is careful not to listen to it, meaning that one should keep his ears away from it, even if listening occurs unintentionally and without choice.

According to Grand Ayatollah Sayyid al-Sistani (may the Almighty prolong his life):
It is permissible to frequent places where permissible music is played, and it is permissible to listen to it intentionally as long as it is permissible. It is also permissible to frequent public places where music is played, even if that music is suitable for gatherings of amusement and play, provided that one does not listen to it intentionally, such as halls for receiving visitors, rooms designated for guests, public parks, restaurants, cafes, and the like - if the music played there is suitable for gatherings of amusement and play [majalis al-la'b wal-lahw] (such that it is forbidden).

May the Almighty grant you tawfeeq in all of your affairs.
